Drought in Kenya

Help in difficult situations. The drought in Kenya is currently affecting many people.

No rain in sight. Hardly any rain has fallen in many parts of Kenya for many months. Drought prevails. The soil is far too dry to grow vegetables or other food. For many, this means a complete failure of the harvest. The persistent drought also means that the animals have no more food. This is devastating for pastoralists. More and more often we see pictures of severely emaciated cows and other animals searching for water. Many animals are dying due to a lack of water and food.

The region around our Eroret School project is particularly hard hit by the drought. The majority of families live from selling milk or livestock. Many have to reduce their meals or even skip them altogether. The children at our school receive a hot meal once a day. For many, this is their only meal of the day. At the end of the day, the children often ask if there are any leftovers that they can take home to their families.

What people need most urgently is food and water for themselves and their livestock. We therefore support the families in the area with food parcels to provide at least the basic food requirements. In the future, we will help to improve the situation sustainably with a water project and agricultural projects.
