India

In Kolkata, formerly Calcutta, we have been supporting the St. Francis Assisi School for more than 35 years. Children from precarious backgrounds are given the opportunity to gain the tools for a better future through education.

Together with our partner organization Kamina Social Welfare Society, we also provide medical care for those who no one else can help. This gives people in particular need access to basic medical care and advice.

As older people in India are often no longer able to be supported by their families, together with Kamina we also finance a “Home for the Elderly”, where senior citizens receive medical care and can thus spend their twilight years in dignity.

Another important project is the “Golden Heaven” home for mentally and physically impaired people whose relatives cannot afford care. This provides them with a sheltered home and individual support.

Help in India

With almost 1.42 billion people, India is the second most densely populated country in the world. The country spans almost all climate zones and is very diverse in terms of flora and fauna as well as its inhabitants. Environmental disasters such as floods occur just as frequently as man-made dramas such as train accidents or river pollution. Although the middle and upper classes are constantly growing, there are many millions of people living in abject poverty. Modern skyscrapers often stand close to slum areas.

Poverty is omnipresent in Howrah, Kolkata’s sister city. As most of the inhabitants were unable to obtain an education themselves, they have to work as day laborers to keep their heads above water. In old age, when they are no longer able to work, they face even more abject poverty. Through the St. Francis Assisi School and the “home for the elderly” that we support, we are trying to give people a better future and a life in dignity.

Our projects

St. Francis Assisi School

Almost 40 years ago, Brother Ephrem had the dream of creating a slum school for the poorest children in the poor sister city of Kolkata, Howrah. After more than 35 years, the need is unfortunately still very great and more than 500 pupils attend the school.

Ananda Ashram Bridhawas retirement home in India

Together with its partner organization Kamina Social Welfare Society, Austrian Doctors runs a retirement home for 30 senior citizens in West Bengal.

Medical care in West Bengal

Together with our partner organization Kamina Social Welfare Society, we provide medical care for those who no one else can help.

Golden Heaven in India

Golden Heaven is a home for mentally and physically disabled people whose relatives cannot afford care. At the moment, 15 people live there, but there are plans to take in more.

School meals for children

Malnourished children are particularly susceptible to infections. In our schools, we therefore provide children with nutritious meals to strengthen their immune system.
