Ethiopia

Together with “Menschen für Menschen”, we are currently implementing a water project in Ethiopia. Our project partner has been working in Ethiopia for decades and therefore has a lot of experience and contacts in the country.

This project is being funded by the state of Salzburg with € 300,000 and is being implemented in the small rural town of Busa. Busa is located in the Oromia region, around 95 kilometers by road to the southwest of Addis Ababa and has a population of around 30,000.

Help in the rural regions of Ethiopia

With over 90 ethnic groups and just as many languages, Ethiopia is a multi-ethnic country and also the most populous landlocked country in the world. A major obstacle to development is the very rapid population growth in a traditionally rural environment that often lacks basic infrastructure.

In many parts of Ethiopia, there is still no supply of clean drinking water. Many people therefore have to resort to unprotected water points in the surrounding area every day to provide for their own families. In addition to the health consequences of consuming the often contaminated water, the inhabitants have to invest a lot of time and effort every day in fetching drinking water for their families. This task is primarily carried out by women and girls. The loss of time is therefore often at the expense of the personal development of the female population. Our aim is to create a sustainable solution to the above-mentioned problems through the municipal water supply in the small town of Busa.

Our projects

Water project in Busa

One major problem is the lack of access to clean drinking water, which is a major obstacle to development for the people of the small town. According to official figures, only just over half of the inhabitants have access to an old water supply system.
