Benefit reading with Erwin Steinhauer

Salzburg premiere! On November 24, 2024, Erwin Steinhauer will read 2 novellas by Joseph Roth for the benefit of the Austrian Doctors projects.

Erwin Steinhauer reads two novellas by Joseph Roth, accompanied by Andrej Serkov on the button accordion. “Der Vorzugsschüler” was published in Austria’s Illustrierte Zeitung on September 10, 1916 and tells the life story of a top student who fails in life despite his success at school. He denies himself laughter and love and unscrupulously tries to swindle his way through life.

“The Emperor’s Bust”, a novella published in the Pariser Tagblatt in 1935, takes us to Galicia, to the small village of Lopatyny. At the center of the story is Count Morstin, who cannot even come to terms with the end of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and still dreams of the restoration of the multi-ethnic state.
