As the number of people infected with HIV/Aids in the region is very high, raising awareness about sexuality, health, communicable diseases and family planning is an important concern for us. In order to make our work sustainable, we therefore also focus on education in Awasi.
When the Nursery School opened, the premises were repeatedly used for workshops in the evenings. In 2022, we then received a grant of € 20,000 from the state of Salzburg, which was used to build our own hall, the Mary Hill Community Center.
Workshops on family planning, sexual health and women’s rights have already been held with our long-standing partner THE RAIN WORKERS. Workshops on agricultural topics have also been held. Soil samples from the participants’ fields were tested, tree planting campaigns were carried out, etc. Many farmers are losing their harvests and many households their livelihoods due to climate change in particular. In order to combat hunger, courses are to be offered in the future together with other NGOs to show people how to deal with the new climatic conditions.
In September 2025, another “Health Camp” was held, where local residents received free medical examinations from doctors. The prescribed medications were also provided to participants free of charge to ensure that people actually received the medicine they needed. Starting in 2025, the “Health Camp” will take place monthly instead of annually, as it did previously.
The following UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are being promoted with the help of this project:
In Awasi, the local NGO “Mary Hill Community Based Organisation” is responsible for implementing the project. Since the beginning of 2017, Austrian Doctors have partnered with Mary Hill Community Based Organisation to jointly establish the nursery school, the community center, as well as the water and reforestation projects.
