Review: “Tod eines Pudels” – An Evening of Classical Music, Comedy, and Extraordinary Atmosphere

On November 22, 2025, the Great Hall of the Mozarteum Foundation became a true magnet for culture enthusiasts.

The benefit performance “Tod eines Pudels” was completely sold out, and the atmosphere in the hall was nothing short of spectacular.

No surprise there – two exceptional artists took the stage, different in many ways yet perfectly complementary: internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirchschlager and sharp-witted comedian Alfred Dorfer.

When Classical Music and Comedy Join Forces

The program “Tod eines Pudels” is a loving, pointed, and delightfully eccentric exploration of the world of classical music. Alfred Dorfer throws himself into it with curiosity and zest, asking:

How does this industry actually work? Why is some of it so solemn, other parts so absurd – and what does opera think of itself?

Angelika Kirchschlager guides him – and the audience – through the highs and lows of the classical world with irresistible charm. With wit, brilliance, and impressive self-irony, she offers insights into an artistic universe that is glamorous, peculiar, and wonderfully human all at once.

Together, they create a “ghost-train ride through the bizarre backstage stories of the classical world”, filled with musical finesse, humorous jabs, and delightfully unexpected moments.

In the end, we are left with a bewildered clown, having experienced the quirks of opera first-hand – and a magnificent singer who shows just how masterfully classical music and humor can be combined.

An Evening That Thrilled Everyone

From the opening moment to the final applause, the atmosphere in the hall was electric. The audience laughed, marveled, and celebrated the two artists with long, enthusiastic ovations.

It was an evening that will be remembered: exceptional, entertaining, surprising – and certainly not your average song recital.
