Floods in Kenya

The El Nino weather phenomenon caused devastation in Kenya in November and December 2023 - and claimed over 120 lives.

The parched ground had no way of absorbing the masses of water. This resulted in torrential streams that washed away everything in their path. In some cases, entire villages were destroyed. As many arable areas naturally also fell victim to the water masses, the consequences in the form of crop failures and hunger will be felt for a long time to come.

Our project region around Awasi was also affected by the heavy rainfall. Project coordinator Rose Omia explains: “The rain started at the beginning of the vacations. After that, it would not have been possible to reach the Community Center anyway, as the road had turned into a raging river. The water flooded our kitchen, among other things, and the damage is considerable. Fortunately, everyone in my personal circle escaped with their lives.”
