Voluntary social year

We are pleased to announce that from fall 2024 there will be the opportunity to complete a Voluntary Social Year (FSJ) at Austrian Doctors. The FSJ can be completed either simply as a year of voluntary work with exciting and meaningful activities or as a recognized alternative to civilian service.

  • We offer the opportunity to gain exciting insights into the work of an internationally active NGO.
  • We are looking for a young person who is as passionate about our topics as we are and who is happy to lend a hand.

Main focus and areas of responsibility:

A varied, exciting and meaningful job is guaranteed:

  • Assistance with the preparation, implementation and follow-up of charity events (charity concert with the Querschlägern in October, reading with Erwin Steinhauer in November, film premiere in November, Christmas market in December (which is also run by volunteers throughout), charity concert with Roland Düringer in May 25). At the concerts, there is always a pool of volunteers who help with the buffet, checkroom etc. on the day of the event.
  • Preparation, implementation and follow-up of the charity run “One Mile for a Smile” incl. support of the exhibition stand at the Salzburg Marathon
  • Educational work in schools – preparation, implementation, follow-up of information events. Possibility, for example, to launch a pen pal concept and start implementing it with our partner schools in Bangladesh, India and Kenya
  • Help with organizational activities in the office as required
  • Creating a concept for our social media channels and managing them
  • Creation of concept, contacting and implementation of information material and distribution of donation boxes in medical practices in Salzburg
  • These are just a few examples of the tasks that can be covered by a person doing the FSJ. All in close consultation and with the support of us two full-time employees. However, we would agree the exact tasks with the person according to their interest, skills and needs.

Everyday work:

Working for the Austrian Doctors is not a classic, repetitive working day. As mentioned above, the activities are varied and also vary depending on the upcoming events. There is a lot to organize in the run-up to the events. The closer the date approaches, the more different things need to be done, which then take priority. For the whole team, the event then takes priority over issues that can be postponed. However, it must of course be ensured that “normal” operations can continue undisturbed.

Certain points, such as creating a concept for our social media channels and managing them or creating a concept, making contact and distributing information material and donation boxes in doctors’ surgeries in Salzburg are ongoing and can also be carried out on a freelance basis. We will also assign the tasks as described according to interest and special skills.

Operating times:

We are looking for a person who is available to work between 25 and 30 hours per week. At least one working day per week will be fixed in the office, one will certainly be away with appointments at doctors’ surgeries, schools, other events etc. A good part of the work can also be done digitally from home. We are flexible – and also work remotely a lot ourselves.

We are:

Austrian Doctors is a globally active Austrian aid organization founded in Salzburg in 2008. Our focus is on medical aid and education and we are committed to helping people regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, social status, religion, nationality or political opinion. We help people in need in “chronic crisis areas” who have no access to medical care, education and basic life resources.

Our medical work includes both direct health care and prevention through hygiene training, health education and protection programs for women and children. In Bangladesh, we operate both a fixed clinic and a “mobile clinic”, which travels to a different poor area of the capital Dhaka every day. Volunteer doctors from Austria and Europe support the permanently employed local medical staff. The medical work also includes structural measures such as the construction of wells.

Almost 3,000 schoolchildren attend the schools we support every day, where they not only receive an education but also a nutritious meal. For many children, this is unfortunately the only hot meal of the day. Through school and training projects as well as scholarships, we give children and adults prospects for the future and the chance to lead a self-determined life. Training and further education strengthen economic independence, while environmental projects such as reforestation and renewable energies help to secure livelihoods in the long term.

We work closely with local partners in all our projects. This long-term cooperation enables sustainable developments that last for decades and secure a better future for local people.
