Education does not only happen in the classroom. Many of the challenges faced by children and families in Awasi can only be overcome through personal support, awareness, and trust. This is where our Rain Workers and Social Workers make an invaluable difference.
Our Rain Workers are specially trained local project team members who regularly conduct awareness workshops directly within the communities. The team includes both female and male Rain Workers, allowing them to engage effectively with different target groups depending on the topic. Schoolchildren, adolescents, young men, women, parents, and older community members can all be reached in a meaningful and appropriate way. The workshops cover topics such as children’s rights, puberty, health, family planning, gender equality, female genital mutilation (FGM), and protection from violence and abuse. This targeted approach creates a safe and respectful environment where even sensitive issues can be discussed openly and with trust.
In addition, our social worker Christin visits families in their homes. These home visits help them better understand individual challenges and provide targeted support where it is needed most. Often, their role goes beyond sharing information – it is also about listening, offering encouragement, and working together with families to find practical solutions.
Over the past months, particular focus has been placed on women’s health, safe motherhood, HIV/AIDS prevention, and the rights and needs of children. Through open discussions and practical examples, participants gain valuable knowledge that empowers them to make informed decisions for themselves and their families.
Their work is not always easy. Poverty, limited access to education, and deeply rooted social traditions often make it difficult for people to access essential information. This makes the continuous presence of our Rain Workers and Social Workers all the more important. By building trust, raising awareness of health, education, and children’s rights, and providing ongoing support, they help create new opportunities for families and entire communities.
We are proud of their dedication. With every workshop, home visit, and conversation, they help bring hope, knowledge, and support to the people who need it most.
