All events were held in our Community Hall and were aimed at different target groups within the local population.
Health education and family planning
One focus was on continuous education on health issues. In groups consisting of women, family members and young people, topics such as family planning, HIV/AIDS prevention and safe motherhood were taught. There was particular interest in natural family planning, which was explained in an understandable way with the help of the so-called “Baby Necklaces”, a vivid learning aid from the Rainworkers.
There was also a workshop on child protection, which drew attention to risks, protection mechanisms and the role of parents and the community. The event raised awareness of the rights and welfare of children – an issue that still receives too little attention in many communities.
Promoting young people: Leadership, entrepreneurship and mobility
Another focus was on the targeted promotion of young people. In a three-day leadership and entrepreneurship training course, 27 young participants worked on their personal development and reflected on how they can use their skills in everyday life and for their future.
In addition, Austrian Doctors supported a first group of young people in obtaining a driving license, a step towards greater professional independence. Of the ten participants, eight successfully completed the training and some have already been able to start work as delivery drivers.
The measure is part of our commitment to tackling the high level of youth unemployment in the region.
