A home is more than just four walls. It is the people we share our lives with, the memories we create together, and the feeling of belonging. When those people are gone, even a familiar house can become a place of loneliness.
For many years, Nilanjana Banerjee enjoyed a happy and fulfilling family life with her husband, daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. But within just a few years, her life changed dramatically. She first lost her only daughter to a severe kidney disease, and a few years later, her husband passed away from heart disease. After these devastating losses, she was left alone, with no family members to care for or support her.
With each passing day, the loneliness grew. There was no one to care for her or support her in everyday life. Although she was well educated and had lived an independent life for many years, she longed for one thing above all: a place where she could once again feel part of a caring community.
Through our project partner, PRADO Welfare Society, Nilanjana was given the opportunity to move into Golden Heaven. Since her admission in March 2024, her life has changed significantly. Instead of living alone, she is now part of a caring community with other residents. She receives support in her daily life, is treated with dignity and respect, and can spend her later years in a safe and secure environment.
What she appreciates most is the respectful treatment and compassionate care she experiences at Golden Heaven. She describes the atmosphere as warm and family-like and feels well cared for by the staff and those responsible for the home.
Nilanjana’s story shows that poverty is not the only reason why older people need support. The loss of loved ones and the absence of social connections can also leave elderly people without the care, stability, and sense of belonging they need.
Golden Heaven offers people like Nilanjana far more than shelter and daily care. It provides a sense of community, safety, and the opportunity to live their later years with dignity, comfort, and belonging.
No one should have to spend the final chapter of life in loneliness. Sometimes, a new home begins where people care for one another.
